Return of the boring demon.
21 January 2015
This is a ghost comedy from Hong Kong where three treasure hunters inadvertently awaken a sleeping demon in a Chinese village, who then goes on a rampage aiming to obtain the souls of 49 people born in the "Hoi" times in order to gain immortality.

The plot outline sounds exciting enough, but the film suffers from an unremarkable cast of characters who couldn't act seriously enough to make their roles believable and captivating. The main story about the Taoist priest master and his disciple attempting to subdue the demon is overshadowed by the boring and unnecessary subplot about the bumbling police chief, who scenes dragged the movie to no end.

The pacing of the plot mixed with multiple subplots go all over the place, making the film uninteresting, and its attempts at comedy (especially the egg-throwing scene) falls flat.

There are plenty of ghost comedies out there worth watching, especially those in the Mr. Vampire series, but this one is not one of them!
