All's Well (1941)
7/10
The baby is smarter than Gabby, though I'll admit that doesn't set the bar very high

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the shorts in the Gabby series produced by the Fleischer studio. There will be spoilers ahead:

Gabby is a character first seen in the Fleischer studio's feature film, Gulliver's Travels. In search of characters around whom they could do shorts, Gabby got a tryout in 1940 and 1941. There were eight in all, this being the third. They were decent enough overall, but Gabby is just not a good character. He's too stupid and mean to be likable.

Here, Gabby is found walking along, singing "All's Well" and trying to be helpful along the way. He gets milk for a kitten and helps a man in his reading first and then comes to his Waterloo-a crying baby in a carriage. By and by, he decides the baby must be crying because he needs a diaper change. Never mind that he has no concrete reason to believe this, he simply decides it must be the case. I suspect the kid was crying because he read the script to this cartoon and knew he had to work with Gabby! The kid proceeds to beat Gabby like a rented mule, much to Gabby's dismay. This is a battle of wits and Gabby is unarmed, so the outcome is a foregone conclusion. Gabby eventually gets the kid to stop crying because he's laughing too hard at Gabby, but by that point, he's forgotten his objective. Gabby doesn't get half the abuse he deserves here. The kid going at Gabby is worth a ten, but Gabby shaves off three points for being Gabby. The ending is predictable but funny.

This short is available on DVD and elsewhere and is worth watching for the kid.
