Warning: Spoilers
Set in an alternative world where instead of the Second World War where the seas have been taken over by the Fleet of the Abyss; monster ships that attack ships and aircraft; this series follows those who battle against them… a fleet of young girls who possess the souls of previously lost military ships! While there are many ships in the fleet the story is centred around Fubuki, a destroyer whose competence initially leave a lot to be desired. Over the course of the series, through hard work and determination, she improves to the point where she can play an important role within the fleet. While the characters aren't battling with the Abyss we see their lives as they train, argue and form friendships back at their base.

While this series is fairly enjoyable it feels like a cross between 'Strike Witches' and 'Arpeggio of Blue Steel' without being as good as either. Fubuki isn't a bad character but she isn't really interesting enough to carry the series and the large supporting cast means no character is given enough time to let the viewer grow to care about them. With the exception of the aircraft carriers it was difficult to remember who is who. As far as the enemy goes; they look nicely menacing but they don't come across as all that menacing; they are fighting a war at sea but we don't see them attacking the girls' home towns or anything to make them a huge threat. It isn't all bad though; the action scenes are fairly dynamic and the way the aircraft carrier girls launch their planes with a bow and arrow is pretty cool and rather inventive. Overall this isn't a must see series but it undemanding fun for the most part.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.
