Two plot elements coincide. The unit has put up with a series of competitions against some Marines and has lost every time. It turns out that at least from their own opinion, there are some pretty good bowlers in the camp. They challenge the Marines and things are set. The problem is the B.J. was a good bowler in grade school. The second more serious plot concerns surgery on Hawkeye's father back home. He is doing everything he can to get a call through to the hospital. This leads to a really interesting conversation between Hawkeye and Charles. There are so many hijinks involving the pompous Major. He is such a windbag and becomes the foil for everyone. Here he tells a story about his own father as he has genuine compassion for Hawkeye. It is a tender scene. The bowling match stretches the bounds of believability, but it is entertaining.
