Lunar Legend Tsukihime

Warning: Spoilers
High-schooler Shiki Tohno has a strange ability; he sees the threads that bind everything together and by cutting these fragile threads he can destroy anything. One day he accidentally kills a woman using this skill; she doesn't remain dead though as she is vampire Arcueid Brunestud. She has no intention to harm him though and claims to be hunting another vampire who has been terrorising the city. Shiki lives with his sister and over the course of the series learns more about his family history and the forgotten events of ten years previously where he gained his strange ability. Shiki and Arcueid defeat their first opponent but there is another threat; one who possesses others and could possibly be somebody close to Shiki.

This twelve episode series is rather fun thanks to good main characters and an interesting story that doesn't outstay its welcome. Shiki is fine protagonist and his strange skill is original and Arcueid is an unusual vampire with a sense of mystery about her; is she really as good as she claims or is she a potential danger; Shiki's friend Ciel certainly thinks the latter. The antagonists are suitably threatening and there are plenty of gripping action scenes where the protagonists confront them. The characters are well designed and distinctive and the animation is good. Given that is it effectively a horror series it is surprising that it isn't darker in tone but that isn't a bad thing. Overall I'd certainly recommend this less well known series to anime fans.
