Powers: Pilot (2015)
Season 1, Episode 1
5/10
At times seems like a mediocre student film, but has its moments
2 June 2015
After watching the first episode, I'm on the fence about Powers. At times it is absolutely dreadful, coming across as a low-budget student film. There are two tedious expository speeches that give information, and in one of them, a newscast, we are told that people aren't sure if they can trust the main character but it's inexplicable why. Often something happens not because it seems organic to the situation but because it's that clichéd thing that always happens. Some scenes seem pointless, like one involving a deck of cards.

At the same time, there are some intriguing moments. The "Wannabe" is an interesting character, and the scene in the bowels of the prison has a genuine tension to it.

Most of the worst of the episode is in the first half, and I almost gave up on it before finishing, but by the end of the episode I'm feeling like it might be worth watching one more. Although I'm not that optimistic.
