Downbeat but compelling
27 June 2015
I decided to get this movie after I discovered it at my local library, because I like Hong Kong action movies and this movie promised lots of action in that engaging Hong Kong style. Imagine my surprise when upon watching the movie I discovered not only was there almost no real action, the movie was extremely serious in nature. But I decided to stick with it, and I'm glad I did. Don't get me wrong - this is a REAL downbeat movie, with depressing themes ranging from police brutality and abuse to the struggle illegal immigrants face in modern day Hong Kong. But all the same, the movie is well made enough (despite a budget that was obviously REALLY low) that it gets you interested enough into finding out how things will be wrapped up at the end. Certainly, this movie is not for everybody - and not for when you are in the mood for a "fun" movie - but if you are in the taste for something different, this movie does prove to be compelling and fresher than usual.
