Zoe.Misplaced (2014)
7/10
A solid effort, few pieces missing but worth watching

Warning: Spoilers
Not being a frequent watcher of LGBTQ films, I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this one. I was pleasantly surprised by the very different and very adult route this film chose to take when telling their story.

While most LGBTQ films tend to be about coming out, fighting for equal rights or other stereotypes, Zoe.Misplaced instead focuses on the everyday life of a young 20-something lesbian who unexpectedly falls in love and suddenly finds her life and other relationships fall apart.

While clearly a low budget film, Zoe.Misplaced takes full advantage of the resources they do have, and the sound/editing issues are far less noticeable when focusing on the cast, particularly Hannah Raven Smith who shines in the title role. She carries the film with dignity and grace, her finest moment by far being the final scene where her relationship with the devious Nat (played by Clementine Mills who is clearly having a lot of fun in the role) is finally stripped to the naked raw truth. The ending is abrupt, even somewhat shocking, and given little explanation. This could be considered a disappointing conclusion, given the lack of answers, but when one considers the scene and story as a whole, these sorts of situations in life are often played out the same way.

The script is quite solid, with excellent witty dialogue, however there are a few plot points, such as Zoe's loving brother which are sadly unresolved and other plot threads mentioned seemingly out of nowhere. Generally speaking, however, this is a solid concept for a film, and the execution is done well in the circumstances and clearly made by a very talented a passionate team behind it.

Australia's film industry is tragically neglected, and this subject matter is even more swept under the rug. Zoe.Misplaced may not be a perfect film, but it contains a lot of potential and heart, and it's certainly a film that will stay with you for a long time.
