"I will not allow my Grandchild to grow up in a polyester environment, even if I have to become...God help me, a baby sitter!" So speaks spoiled and self-centered concert pianist, Suzanne Pleshette, the not quite estranged mother of new mommy Courtney Cox. Pleshette has been estranged from her former best friend Debbie Reynolds for many years, only coming together because Reynolds happens to be Cox's mother-in-law, a "Miss Polly Perfect", a quality Pleshette regrets. When they learn that they are about to be grandmothers, this leads to a battle for who will be there more for the baby.

Alternately sweet but sitcomish, this is a typical pairing of two veteran actresses who totally compliment each other yet are cast as rivals. Her first film after playing queen of mean Leona Helmsley, Suzanne removes the tight lips yet is still playing a rather cold fish. Pleshette's character is hiding major insecurities behind that delightfully raspy voice.

As for Reynolds, she's simply playing what everybody expects her to be: little miss cheerful who is suppressing so much. Her character isn't as well developed as Pleshette's, but Debbie is somebody you can't help but love. At one point, they get onto a bench set shoving match almost identical to Shirley MacLaine's and Olympia Dukakis's in "Steel Magnolias ". Formula domestic comedy is hard to dislike but oh so easy to forget.
