A British lawyer based in the USA, Maya Cobbina (Sophie Okonedo) is meeting a death row inmate Rudy Jones (Dennis Haysbert) for the final time as he is on his way to the execution chamber.
Her children including autistic son and husband Nick Johnson (Adrian Lester) watch her on television in England giving an impassioned speech outside the prison. The execution is botched and Maya rushes back to prison.
After an interesting opening things settle down as Maya returns to Britain. We get some flashbacks at to how she met Nick in 1996 at an anti racism rally.
We then get to the gist of the series. Nick goes to a hospice to visit his dying father, he takes off his wedding ring. His father has no idea that his son is married with children. He is in deep cover because the series is inspired by real life news events.
Nick is living a lie and for all we know has no feelings for Maya or his children. It could all be part of the job.
