Warning: Spoilers
"Der Fall Gleiwitz" or "The Affair Gleiwitz" is one of the most known east German movies about the events of World War II or Nazi Germany and this one here approaches the issue from an entirely diplomatic standpoint. This is exactly the subject I would like in general I must say. In films, I do not care about the military action at all usually really, but more about the motivations and preferences of the key players. It is about the backgrounds and manipulative tactics Hitler used in order to justify his invasion of Poland. This is he very general summary and I do believe that it could have been the basis for a very intriguing movie. Sadly this is not what this film by Klein and Kohlhaase (still very known today here in Germany) turned out to be. It is tough to say what the problem is. it is certainly not the runtime as it stays extremely short at only 70 minutes, so it should have been extremely essential. Nonetheless, it feels as if the movies loses itself in its script on several occasions and never manages to build a realistically convincing plot around its protagonists. I ended up not caring at all who these people were or what they did. And that's basically the worst that could happen to a film. I find it really disappointing as the subject offered so much more that what the outcome finally achieved. I don't thinks this film is worth watching. Not recommended.
