Hayley Kiyoko: Girls Like Girls (2015 Music Video)
Simple enough music video that at least plays to the characters and not the sexuality
3 July 2016
As proof of my age I can honestly say I had never heard of Hayley Kiyoko, but an afternoon bumbling around YouTube looking for short films found this music video which also delivers a story-driven short film approach. As the title of the song and video suggests, it is about girls who like girls which, as a title, is fairly poor and sounds like a porn series. The plot sees a girl regularly catching the eye of another girl who has a boyfriend. This goes on in a playful manner for a few minutes until they maybe start to make a move, then the boyfriend turns up sparking a violent confrontation. As a story it is fairly simple but kudos to it for not going overboard on the faux lesbian side – which with 2 very attractive leads, it could easily have done this and played everything a lot more sensually. This is not to say that the film doesn't also enjoy the sexuality of its two characters but although it does enjoy the playful flirting, it doesn't feel like it is exploiting the characters.

In the end though, it is a fairly ho-hum affair. It looks good, and the pop 101 track playing wasn't offensive or bad, just unmemorable. In the same way the video is very professional, very well made, but doesn't offer a great deal to get excited by in terms of character or story.
