Brendan Dillon and Powys Thomas
19 August 2016
"The Long Rifles" opens with the Ojibwes using long rifles to kill white settlers. Hawkeye and Chingachgook arrive in Watertown to visit gunsmith Eben Cotten (Brendan Dillon, last of two), whose rifles carry a distinguishing mark of his own design, and keeps a journal of every gun sold. His daughter is being courted by trader Neil (Larry Solway, last of two), giving up his own cache of rifles to avoid competition with his future father-in-law. A failed ambush conducted by Ponca (Juan Root, seventh of eight) leads Hawkeye to suspect someone other than Cotten to be guilty of selling out to Ojibwe Chief Towak (Powys Thomas, last of six), especially when Eben, his daughter, and their entire stock goes missing. It's no stretch to guess who the culprit is, but there are some surprises in store before the end.
