The movie of zero delights
16 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"Die Insel der tausend Freuden" or "Island of 1000 Delights" or "Triangle of Venus" and there are half a dozen English alternate titles for this one is a co-production between France and West Germany from 1978. This resulted in a German-language movie and it will soon have its 40th anniversary. The director is Hubert Frank and he is known for his trashy sex-themed comedies/dramas and this one here also falls in the latter category. The writer is credited here on IMDb as Jean-Jacques Duval, but as he has never written another film apparently, I am not sure how true this is. It may very well be Frank under an alias as he usually wrote the films he directed as well. Anyway, the movie runs for slightly under 1.5 hours and has very little to offer unfortunately except attractive people, especially Olivia Pascal, who is very stunning once again in her early 20s. So yeah, if you are in it for the sex scenes, then you may somewhat enjoy the watch. But it is really difficult to look beyond the pretty bad production in all other areas and even if the actors are fairly forgettable, they are still the smallest evil here. The main problem, as with many other Frank films, is probably the script/screenplay. The dramatic moments are not working at all and this becomes especially painful to watch when the movie takes itself seriously on more than just a few occasions. The thriller/crime moments never work at all and this film gets a major thumbs-down from me. Don't watch.
