This episode of Colonel March mixes things up a bit by allowing our detective to go on location. THE STRANGE EVENT AT ROMAN FALL is set in one of those spooky old mansions set on a cliff top above the sea which Gothic writers have loved for centuries. Karloff must unravel the mysteries surrounding the death of a reclusive author whose body has been found smashed on the rocks below the house.
The storyline incorporates a blackmail plot and a thrill-seeking journalist and fits plenty of incident and sub-plots into its running time. Karloff has little to do here other than arrive and put a lid on everything, but there's no denying the atmosphere in the piece and it's one of the few episodes that could have benefited from being done at feature length.
