Mammy loses her flapjacks...
28 January 2017
I have seen many dozen of the early Felix the Cat cartoons and because I am missing a few, I am glad I got the new DVD from Alpha Video and the collection of John Carpenter, as it featured several shorts I haven't been able to find elsewhere.

This Felix the Cat cartoon does not have added sound effects-- something that was done to many of the silent cartoons though there is added music. This is a plus here because the Felix cartoons are sometimes hellishly bad once they had the sound effects added! Just having a musical score is a good thing, believe me!

In this installment Felix steals some pancakes from a 'Mammy's Pancake Mix' sign. While this is pretty funny in some ways, the racist depiction of black folks is problematic when seen today. To avoid her, Felix travels to the wild west--but his problems only get worse with cowboys and Indians constantly shooting at him.

Overall, this is just an okay short--funny at times but often just seeing him getting shot at IS the joke. Not bad but a bit below average for the Felix series.

By the way, you see a swastika on one of the Indian teepees. DON'T freak out--this symbol is thousands of years old and was used by Indians in India as well as in the United States. Relax!!
