It is Dan't birthday and when they are celebrating at Lobo some douche starts a fight with Dan but Roseanne doesn't want him to be part of it and he feels bad about backing down.
I liked the story of this episode. It is maybe a bit exaggerated as I don't know anybody over the age of 25 who would accuse Dan of being scared when making a mature decision to not fight. But Dwight's attitude to it was probably done to emphasize how Dan felt about this situation. And it is understandable that he was questioning himself, especially since it was his birthday. Very good acting by John Goodman.
I also loved the ending when he smashed the guy into his face!
