Warning: Spoilers
Phillauri is a sweet film by Anshai Lal, in which love stories of two different eras are interspersed. The transition from the era where surrendering oneself completely in love to an era where state of being confused in love is projected. The pace of the film certainly gets slow at times and also gets predictable. Issues viz. Superstition, Saving trees, the aftermath of freedom fights etc. are also touched upon.

Kannan (Suraj Sharma of Life of Pi fame plays one of the lead character) comes to India from Canada for his marriage with Anu (Mehreen Pirzada), with whom he is in love since long. Being a Mangalik, he is suggested by the astrologers to get married to a tree first prior to getting married to Anu. Although he is irritated and finds it weird, he yields to the requests of Anu and family members. Once he is back to his room in destination wedding place, that is where the entry of Anushka Sharma happens as Shashi who is a ghost and claims that it is with her Kannan got married. The interaction between Shashi and Kannan does generate lot of humour. Slowly the love story of Shashi with Diljit unveils, the scenes are interspersed with developments during Kannan and Anu's marriage preparations. Diljit and Shashi live in a village in Phillaur in Punjab in pre-independence period. Diljit is a singer. The whole village reads the poetries of a person with the pen name Philauri. Shashi lives a very reticent life along with brother. Situations so happen that both Shashi and Diljit fall in love.

The story develops from there. What happens to Kannan and Anu's relationship? Why is Shashi unable to transit to the other world? What is the unfinished business in this one? What is her motive? What happened to the love story of Shashi and Diljit? Were they able to get married? What is the connection between both the stories? How do Kannan and Anu become instrumental in helping Shashi understand her purpose of not being able to live the earth? Who is Phillauri, the titular character?

Anushka Sharma does generate humour with her act of a ghost but her performance as Shashi of pre-independence period is very good. Diljit is very good and his presence on screen is very much endearing.

Suraj Sharma as Kannan is very good, natural as a confused person who is not sure about getting married so early. He also enacts well as a person who is miffed up with Shashi's presence around.

Mehreen Pirzada as Anu is also nice and sweet. Shashi's brother and Nidhi Bisht (Shashi's best friend) are also very good. Rest of the supporting characters have played their roles well.

The song Sahiba and Dumb Dumb are very soulful.

Phillauri is a sweet film.
