Basically, if the Fatal Frame games had a Peruvian cast, it would be this movie.
An amateur film crew sneak into an abandoned haunted house known to the locals as the "Matusita" in the hopes of making a documentary for their senior college project. Dark rumors and urban legends abound about the property. The original owner was purported to be the last person in Peru to be burned at the stake for witchcraft, and subsequent owners went insane or killed their families. The last family to live in the house was Japanese, (the name of the house is based on their name, Matsushida) and the father slaughtered the household before committing seppuku.
As the film crew search the house for the answers behind the stories, they find that the truth has far more layers than anticipated and they may be well out of their depths.
Vaguely reminiscent of the Blair Witch Project (this is a found- footage style movie), this film is ideal for those who enjoy classic "OMG, is something behind him!?" waiting-with-bated-breath pop-outs and classic haunted house mysteries based in reality (the Matusita is a real-life house in Lima, Peru, and is considered one of the most-haunted in the country). Fans of type will find the scares are plentiful, creepy, well timed, and disturbing.
They show just enough to horrify, without over exposure or over explanation.
Critics of the film may find the build a tad slow, or find the film crew, who freak out in culturally-typical ways, annoying or accidentally comical rather than dramatic or sincere.
