Turnabout (1940)
6/10
35 very funny minutes
8 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Turnabout" takes too long (almost half its total length, in fact) to set its central (and original, for its time) body-switching plot mechanism in motion , but when that happens, it becomes very funny. I don't think I have ever seen John Hubbard before, but he gives a great performance here: he perfectly nails the body language and facial expressions of a woman (Carole Landis also has to get some of the credit for her voice work, but when she's playing a man she's not as "manly" as Hubbard is "womanly" when he's playing a woman. Got all that?). Then in the last 10 minutes the film becomes conventional again - but the final gag is worth waiting for. **1/2 out of 4.
