It's that classic cop show trope: a fraternity of brothers tarnished by one bad apple. But it gets a fresh coat of paint via the "Lethal Weapon" formula. This is a story of the LAPD butting heads with the L.A. Sheriffs, and less about Murtaugh and Riggs than it is Avery (who, up until now, has just been their aggravated boss), yet they get caught right up in it.
It's largely the acting that sells this, but it's got humor, plot turns and solid writing; the kind that showcases Riggs' and Murtaugh's partnership while still highlighting a supporting player. Very nicely done.
