Afghanistan through a child's eyes
10 September 2018
In the 21st century, we're used to animated features being escapist, often the sorts of movies that nine-year-olds will find entertaining, and always based on star power. That's just one of the things that makes "The Breadwinner" such a breath of fresh air. This story of a girl in Taliban-era Afghanistan forced to pose as a boy to provide for her family shows that an animated feature can be just like a live-action feature; after all, animation is simply another type of moviemaking. Realistic plot, no famous names (except for executive producer Angelina Jolie) and no over-the-top musical numbers. It certainly doesn't paint a pretty picture of the Taliban.

I think that this should've won Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. "Coco" had an interesting story, but this focused on a more important topic. I understand that there was a movie called "Osama", which had a similar plot. In the meantime, definitely watch "The Breadwinner".

Another movie that focuses on a girl's childhood in a fundamentalist regime is Marjane Satrapi's "Persepolis", about her coming-of-age in 1980s Iran.
