Downrange (2017)

Intense and nerve-racking, with some hefty gore!

Warning: Spoilers
Of course your ideal (horror)movie would be one with great acting, luscious settings, impressive special effects and heaps of scares and gore. But in the real world we almost always have to settle for a bit less, mostly due to budget-rasons. And that is, especially in the horror-genre, not a bad thing, because it forces producers and directors to be inventive, and it's fascinating to see where they come up with.

So I dare to say that I was impressed by this one. Sure, the acting was not Oscar-winning, there was just that one set, and the goings-on got at times a bit repetitive, but in spite of all that they succeeded in making me sit on the edge of my chair the whole one and a half hour, it was so extremely intense and nerve-racking!! And what they didn't deliver in the acting-area, they sure as hell delivered in the gore-department, wow, this movie is definitely not for the faint-hearted!

So compliments for the makers, and with that I forgive them the silly last scene (although I would strongly advise: come-on, change it, it's just one minute!).

Apart form all the above, I have a more basic thing to say about this kind of movie, where an anonymous person harasses (even kills, like here) innocent bystanders without ever explaining the who and why. I like to believe that the writer and/or director have some artistic reasons for this, but the net effect remains that as a viewer you end up going home with a frustrated and unsatisfied feeling. Is that really the feeling that the makers want to leave behind with their public?!? It seems such a waist of an otherwise very rewarding movie-experience!
