HBO has turned out some impressive series over the past two decades: "Sex and the City", "The Sopranos", "Six Feet Under", "Game of Thrones" & "Big Little Lies". It continues this good trend with "Sharp Objects". This mystery/drama with a flavoring of southern gothic isn't so much a whodunit as a look at the past and personality of its protagonist. The self-harming reporter (Amy Adams), her overbearing mother (Patricia Clarkson), and the rest of the characters make for one of the most interesting miniseries that I've ever seen. Not that I would expect less from Jean-Marc Vallée (director of "Dallas Buyers Club", "Wild" and "Big Little Lies"). Most importantly, it's good to see that Amy Adams is taking these complex roles; any actress in her position could've taken fluffy, vacuous roles that would've doomed her to a short-lived career. And I shouldn't have to tell you that Patricia Clarkson puts on one of the most intense performances that you'll ever see (when does she not?).

All in all, a great miniseries. Mind you, it'll leave you feeling disturbed.
