This episode is pretty much similar to most of Season 1: Ghost has a problem, Melinda has to fix it. Its true significance is that it presents a strong foreshadowing of future seasons. What happens when a beloved just can't crossover?
To be clearer, this is exactly the same predicament Jim has after his death. Their dialogue concerning what the one would do if the other dies comes true in Season 4, and especially the episode "Threshold." I don't know if the writers already had the story line mapped out that far, or if they simply remembered this episode and applied it to the later season. But, in retrospect, having seen the whole series, I'm tempted to think the former.
