Silly, unserious, and at times completely ridiculous, 'Venom' offers an origin story which is completely unrelated to the comics, and for that matter, spider-man. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. This idea had potential, but the execution results in a bunch of cliches (particularly as concerns the "villain", a stereotypical tech CEO.)
Tom Hardy is great to watch no matter what movie he's in. Without him this film would be completely forgettable.
Using Carnage as the evil symbiote, rather than some random Venom clone would have seemed the obvious route, but they are clearly saving that character for the sequel.
