Homicide in the land of the Hardys...
1 January 2019
... well, not really. The Andy Hardy family has nothing to do with this film, but this entry in the series does have Nick traveling back to his small hometown to visit his parents, and it looks a lot like the Hardy hometown of Carvel in many ways - everybody knows everybody else.

Nick's dad is a physician about to get the research hospital he has always dreamed of finally built. And then a few strange things happen. For one, Nora buys a painting of a windmill that Nick always talks about fondly from his youth, and everybody seems to want that painting. She gets followed, she gets wild offers of money for it, and people who do get it end up conked on the head or worse. But what starts the whole mystery in gear is when a local man knocks on Doc Charles' door, asks to speak to Nick, and before he can say his piece is shot in the back while standing in the front doorway. Then there is Nick's old pal Brogan (Ed Brophy)- one that he sent up the river but who has no hard feelings - who Nick keeps finding outside of the Charles home in the bushes at night. What goes on here? Watch and find out.

Note that the war is incorporated into several scenes here. When the Charles' are on the train to Nick's hometown, the train is standing room only, packed with soldiers, sailors, and all sorts of people. Trains were often filled to capacity during the war. When Nick tries to lose Nora during one of his investigations, he tosses a bunch of dance tickets and Nora to a sailor on a dance floor. The sailor proceeds to nearly jitter bug her to death.

With Asta as the world's oldest living wire hair fox terrier, and if not that then the most youthful. Asta was around, still with lots of vitality, thirteen years after the first Thin Man was made in 1947. Note that Ed Brophy is playing a completely different character in this Thin Man than he did in the original - there he actually tried to shoot Nick. Also costarring an assortment of MGM contract players. The series still had it after all of these years.
