Martin Clunes returns to comedy in Warren. I use the word comedy in its loosest term.

In the first episode Clunes plays a misanthropic and penny pinching driving instructor Warren Thompson. He has moved to Lancashire so his partner can care for her elderly father.

Warren gets his stepson a job at a garden centre so he can benefit from a staff discount. His other stepson is frustrated that they are still on dial up internet (which I doubt is even available nowadays.)

Over the course of the episode we see Warren fly tipping, not giving his students a proper driving lesson, embarrass his stepson on his first day at work, even trying to steal from his neighbours and the local petrol station.

You would think grumpy Warren would be frustrated at the world like Victor Meldrew used to be. However Warren is a person you care little about because he is not sympathetic enough.

At least Clunes gives an energetic performance but he is a character that needs softening up and the writing needs some proper comedy.
