I am deeply amazed that TV controllers have managed to squeeze as much mileage as they have out of this limp excuse for a TV show. Just where is the entertainment value in watching a group of contrasting people being imprisoned in a house and being put under the watch of CCTV cameras?

The title of the show of course comes from George Orwell's 1949 novel 'Nineteen Eighty Four'. If Mr. Orwell were still alive today, do you think he would be best pleased at a piece of his work being likened to this abomination? I think not!

Of all the prisoners, sorry I mean contestants, who have appeared on the show, perhaps the most memorable was the late Jade Goody ( someone who once thought East Anglia was abroad ). On one occasion, Goody delivered racial abuse against Shilpa Shetty. This caused 3000 complaints to flood into Channel 4, which subsequently resulted in Goody being evicted from the 'Big Brother' house. Another stand out moment featuring Goody ( unfortunately ) had her drunkenly stripping off during a poker game, at one point which she shrieked ''Agh! My kebab's showing!'' It's enough to put you off kebabs for life.

Channel 4 came to their senses and dropped 'Big Brother' from their station many years back, however Channel 5, in a colossally stupid move, decided to pick up the baton instead. Will this charade never end?
