Theo Von: No Offense (2016 TV Special)
4/10
Proof that offensive comedy can sometimes miss the mark
30 May 2019
I'm a big fan of Theo Von's appearances on podcasts and his more natural comedy, but his standup can leave a lot to be desired. Following the trend of offensive comedy that has been succesful for a lot of other standups, Theo lacks the finesse to actually pull it off.

His lack of filter makes him one of the funniest guys to watch ramble, but when it's mixed in with his pre-written show plan, it can feel very disjointed. While there are a couple of funny moments, some of it is really cringey, and that's not because I have an issue with offensive comedy. While those like Anthony Jeselnik have the ability to make you laugh about some of the most controversial topics, Theo seems to take the same premise, and the same punchlines, but misses any of the substance in between.

Whether it was Netflix's audio editing I don't know, but the crowd looks particularly uninterested for the first half of the performance, notably showing little reaction to the punchlines and adding to that overwhelming feel of cringe.

Great comedian to keep an eye on, but standup's not his specialty.
