EPIC, FUNNY, TRIPPY! CARTOON MASTERPIECE!
7 June 2019
I saw this title in a movie theater, when it came out, back in 1982. Nothing compares to the experience of seeing this. Kubrick meets Lynch in a cartoon, sort of thing. Inspired by the eternal story "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson, this movie takes a different approach and goes on its own adventure with a mix of fun, avant-garde and epic proportions, rare for this time. Not to be confused with Disney's take on the same book with the same title from 2002, which is exactly 20 years later. Is it coincidence? Who knows, but the Bulgarian movie is still epic, funny and avant-garde even today in 2019. Directed by the famous Rumen Petkov, who later moved to USA to work for Cartoon Network, to direct episodes of "Johnny Bravo", "Cow and Chicken", "Dexter's Laboratory" and more, this cartoon demonstrates enormous talent and out-of-the-box approach to a classic story. The movie effects for the time being were and still great. There are very trippy both visual and sound effects. The plot unfolds steadily one frame at a time. I saw this movie again on my laptop recently and it still gives me goosebumps. A must-see for all sci-fi and weird movie fans!!
