FLCL gave us such a story and then left us hanging in the end, so when the progressive and alternative was announced we were all under the impression that Naota would return trying to express his pre adolescent love... but instead they abandoned that story line, even if there was any way to thread the two stories in a linear flow it just leaves us unsatisfied. This whole Quentin Tarantino approach to chopping up the story line and somehow making it make sense did not work. If the stories are linear too much time has passed with unanswered questions to the original fans of FLCL. What they need to do is continue off where it left off and show us how things went to his adulthood... at least that way we can understand what progressives approach is. They need to touch base on his brother as well, such a huge marker in his life that's always brought up but no back story.
If they abandoned the original story all together then that's just bad writing and should not have gave it the FLCL name and rebadged it or renamed it as a spin-off
