I'm surprised I am the first person to evaluate the first episode of the "Lou Grant" show. In 1977, following the end of the "Mary Tyler Moore" show, the comedic boss of WJR's newsroom becomes a more realistic character and heads off to LA. This episode is a bit uneven because first he has to get the job at the City Desk for the Los Angeles Tribune. He is immediately thrust into the internal and external controversies and a scandal within a police precinct, involving underaged girls. There is something sort of plodding about this first episode but that is not unusual.
