Squidward Tentacles has switched jobs before. When he was fired in 'The Curse of King Krabbe', he became a crossing guard. But only because he chose to. Here he did it for a bet. I didn't have to watch very much of the episode to see that neither he nor SpongeBob are particularly sympathetic. He thinks he wins the bet, but he's just a better cashier than a bus driver. He's even a better crossing guard than a bus driver. Or maybe he'd be a better bus driver if he chose to be one. Anyway, a waste of potential.
