Supernatural: In My Time of Dying (2006)

One of the best directed episodes gets season 2 started right
7 September 2019
This episode is a class on how to do more with less at creating atmospherics. The use of long takes and the way Dean disappears during them utterly works to capture the tone of Dean being caught in between states. Tessa's entire story is captured in how light and shadow is used to shift our feelings about her. Innocent one moment, ominous the next. Couple that with a few gorgeous shots-i.e. coffee cup-and this is one of the best directed episodes of the entire season.

The script does an economical job of setting up the central dynamics of the season 2-i.e. Dean's guilt, what is wrong with Sam-while telling a compelling critical chapter in the Winchester story. This is a solid opening to the season.
