An interesting sort-of biography
11 September 2019
This follows the author Barbara Pym (played by Patricia Routledge) as she goes to church, London, her doctor and to the banquet for the Booker prize. It is interspersed with interviews with actual authors discussing her work. In addition, some of the characters from her life are played by themselves. (I think Barbara Pym's sister, Hilary, stars as Miss Pym's sister, Hilary) So the short film is an interesting combination of documentary and fiction.

I initially watched this because I'm a big fan of Patricia Routledge. I had not read any of Pym's books so I found some of the incidents a bit baffling. Thereafter, I read some of her books, rewatched the film, and found that Miss Pym along with the real people in her life also encounters some of her fictional creations as well as observes ordinary people reciting lines from her books. I enjoyed it the second time but it's really a film for Pym fans. If you're unfamiliar with her work, you probably won't get it.
