Review of Country Music

Country Music (2019)
3/10
Shallow superficial, melodramatic

The first few episodes were the best. But it concentrates on only a few performers, and gives them all credit. On the origins of Rock'n'roll, there was no mention of "Good Rockin" Roy Brown, although there were a few seconds of Elvis singing that song. No mention of how Elvis copied a black singers sound. Later on, I kept wondering how Burns decided when to stop following a steam of music, such as rock, folk, and consider it "no longer country"? The later episodes became mostly celebrity gossip and sob stories. Peter Coyote speaks as if every sentence is like he's Moses revealing the 10 Commandments, with no change of pace, and it gets very pompous and tiring. Perhaps the fault is Burns for directing him to speak thus? Burn's national parks series had the same pompous narration, as it pushed the outdoors as religious experience.

WIth so many songwriters featured in most of the show (as opposed to traditional music) writers such as Stephen Foster should also be considered part of "country music".
