One of the best British detective dramas....EVER!!

Absolutely top notch drama....typical of the best that EVER came out of the UK. Alfred Burke, an actor previously unknown to me is absolutely perfect for the role. Rough=looking and fresh out of prison and looking hard for a new career sets himself up as a sort of private detective. Making a living out of it is hard, both because of his past and, more importantly, because of his moral standards..he can't make himself profit from a job that he deems unsavoury...so he remains poor. There are only a few episodes surviving from the first 3 or 4 seasons but plenty from then on and what episodes they are. Mystery, crime and criminals...the writing is splendid and never a repeated idea or plot. This is beyond doubt, oned of the finest police/detective dramas I have ever seen...from either side of the pond and each one is unique and compelling...and not fabricated so by virtue of explosions and shootings...just great writing and acting all around. Interesting as well is the abundance of actors later well known, playing single episode characters..including a young and delicious Carol Drinkwater of All Creatures fame. All in all one of the best so if you have a chance to see it...have at it!
