Review of Pearson

Pearson (2019)
7/10
intriguing city hall drama

It's a spinoff from Suits. After getting disbarred in New York, Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres) returns to her home town of Chicago. She does a deal with Mayor Bobby Novak to help her elderly aunt Lillian Cook. Lillian's daughter Angela wants no part of Jessica who becomes the mayor's new fixer despite her past suits against the city.

I'm a fan of Suits but I also see the franchise's flaws. This spinoff is intriguing in that it doesn't have the same flaws but I am still drawn to it in different ways. First off, there is no easy romance and it doesn't have the sexiness of Suits. It does have Gina Torres. It's a more gritty part of the spectrum. It does have the same overwrought gene but it doesn't overboard like its parent. I am slowly taken with a few of the characters. Initially, I didn't get Angela's hatred of Jessica but eventually their rivalry grew on me. With only ten episodes, it's understandable that the characters grow their personalities over time. In the end, the show has no more and doesn't get the chance to build up this world.
