The film opens with Peyton Elizabeth Harris taking a set of racy pictures of herself as she is scantily clad while investigating online the subject of "breast augmentation." Along with the photo shoot, the film's soundtrack includes a song with the lyrics, "We will elevate our life!"
It turns out that Peyton's life is elevated to the level of a nightmare after her best friend Audrey (Auds) plays a vindictive prank when she discovers the photos on Peyton's laptop and sends them to the "Shutter Mug" site. In turn, a wacko named Edward Carl Cooke obtains the photos and places them on public display on his own devilish website called "Ex My Ex." Peyton's life and that of her family are now be endangered due to the deranged Cooke.
The screenplay was overloaded with subplots and intricate details about Cooke's plan and the coincidental relationship he had with Peyton's mom Elaine, when she was a history teacher named Miss Forrester. Eddie sat in the front row and wrote mash letters to his teacher. After she reported him, Eddie was expelled and sent to "juvie" where a guard "had his way" with him. Now, it is payback time for Eddie Cooke.
It was never made clear in the film who was the middleman named "John Smith" who had apparently alerted Cooke to the photos on Shutter Mug. It was a stretch as well to believe that Auds would not know the implications of sending out the photos in the first place that would damage the life of her "bestie" since kindergarten. And Eddie showing up inside the Harris home for one last demented act was approaching the point of absurdity in credibility.
The film's theme includes the mother-daughter bonding that will see them through this traumatic event. There is as well a unified effort from other women who have been victimized by Cooke's Ex My Ext site and join forces with Elaine to finally put a stop to his diabolical schemes. As one of the women remarks, there is always "safety in numbers" when it comes to what can be accomplished by a group of resolved women!
