Doki Doki Literature Club! (2017 Video Game)

An Odd Curveball! A Genre-Defining Game!
28 December 2019
At first, I thought Doki Doki Literature Club was just going to be a dating simulator or a visual novel. I mean, not just any dating simulator or visual novel, since people spoke so highly of it, but an interesting one. So I knew there would be something different to this game - something special. Perhaps a great soundtrack, amazing graphics, or just a simple but great story.

Well, what I found was so much more rewarding than anything I was expecting!

When I first opened the game, I was greeted by the warning "This game is not suitable for children or for those who are easily disturbed.". After reading that simple message, I thought to myself "I think I'm gonna like this game", not knowing what Doki Doki had in store for me.

This game really is something special. I've never played something like this. The soundtrack is simple, intentionally repetitive, and thoughtfully placed and edited. The graphics or the "art" is intentionally generic and it does a great job at masking what Doki Doki Literature Club truly is.

The writing is very entertaining and, at times, hilarious. Not because the situations are funny, but because you - the player - know exactly what the game is doing and/or forcing you to do. I never thought I'd have so much fun playing a game like this and I'm so happy that someone was creative enough to put something like this together.

Doki Doki Literature Club is a breath of fresh air to a somewhat bloated genre of video games. This genre is not for everyone, and even Doki Doki can be a painful game for someone who is not into this genre at all. But if you can just get through those first hours, you'll be amazed at how a game can throw you a ball so curved, it warps around your mind and leaves you speechless.
