Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019 Video Game)

By No Means a Need to Play Game

Seems like the writing was given a pretty major back seat on this game. The character and especially relationship development is nonexistent, the plot is barebones, and the climax was about as exciting and impactful as pocket lint. Maybe they could have fleshed it out more if they had included the other half of the game that I have to assume was planned at some point.

What the game lacks in writing, it tries to make up for with gameplay, and it does a pasable job at this. For the most part, the combat is quick and enjoyable, without falling into the "hack and slash" button mashing pitfall. However, the levels are extremely linear, lacking much incentive to explore, unless you happen to care about the collectibles, which fall into two categories: 1. Extra EXP/HP/Force power, which accounts for maybe 1/5 - 1/4 of collectibles. And 2. Useless cosmetics items which are mostly drab color schemes for your poncho or a slight variation of your lightsaber hilt. The only customizable options I really cared about were lightsaber colors, and those are not collectibles, so I never felt any desire to go back to planets and explore them with new force powers.

Although the gameplay was certainly the best part of this game, it wasn't without its problems. They were mostly little things, like certain boss fights being poorly designed, or platforming mechanics being frustratingly clunky in certain areas. But little things can add up, and I quickly doubt myself having more moments of irritation than I had of enjoyment, which resulted in me kind of looking forward to being done with the game.

Overall, it's an alright game. If you like platforming, especially, you'll probably like this game. But if you're looking for a good RPG with a satisfying story and characters that you can adore... well, The Witcher 3 is always a great option.
