Spinning Out (2020)
7/10
Good, but had the potential to be Great.

I liked this series. But it could have been so much better. First off, there is WAY to many characters. The primary focus should have been on Kat & Justin and their rise as a partnership in skating (and more). With their families & coach being the secondary characters - instead there is another (at least) 10 supporting characters on top of that (!!!). Dial it back a bit. Secondly, cut back on the episodes. 8 probably would have fit better. I don't need to see endless subplots about the non core characters. Third, less social commentary. Marcus could have been a great character. But his only major story arcs (apart from being infatuated with Kat) were 'white people are racist'. If it happened once? Ok fine. But he had 5 separate incidents of 'white people bad' in 5 episodes and it got boring & repetitive real quick. And it made him two-dimensional.

As to what I did like. Justin (Evan Roderick) was the highlight of the whole series, and I kind of wish he was the main protagonist over Kat. I liked that in the first episode you thought has was going to be the stuck up rich guy, but over the season he ended up being the nicest and most supportive of those around him. Although I did find it weird that out of the 20 supporting characters Justin is the only one without any close friends. I mean, they even highlight Marcus & Jenn's extra friends (apart from Kat), but Justin has no one? Strange and a bit sad. Dasha (the coach) & Mandy (stepmother) were also great to watch. The music choices when they were skating were also strong. Beethoven, Romeo & Juliet, Midsummer Nights Dream. Nice choices. And the dances themselves were great to watch. Also, the fact there was no weird CGI faces like in I, Tonya, was a major plus! :)
