The Good Place (2016–2020)
9/10
more than a network sitcom
31 January 2020
Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) dies and arrives at The Good Place. She is met by Michael (Ted Danson), the architect of The Good Place. Janet (D'Arcy Carden) is the near omnipotent avatar. Chidi Anagonye (William Jackson Harper) is Eleanor's philosopher soulmate. Tahani Al-Jamil (Jameela Jamil) is a British socialite. Jason Mendoza (Manny Jacinto) is a mute monk. The only problem is that Eleanor is not the clown-loving selfless humanitarian philanthropist death row lawyer that everyone expects. She was actually a selfish jerk on Earth. There has been a mistake.

The first season is a fine network TV show. It has a solid cast and a functional premise. It seems to be slightly humorous. I like the group and then it takes a sharp turn. It is audacious in thinking that it could last 13 episodes to get to the twist. It's like a long con which pays off despite the odds. The shock is extremely satisfying. It is a rare network sitcom which tries to break the mould and say something new.
