Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist: Pilot (2020)

There is an element of The Yellow Brick Road in the pilot of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. The opening scene is bathed in light yellow, the sets have a streak of yellow.

Zoe is a coder in a San Francisco tech firm who is going for a promotion.

Her headaches prompts Zoe to go to a MRI scan and suddenly people burst out singing to her.

A comedy/musical/drama. The songs triggers something in Zoe about people communicating to each other. Her father cannot speak because of neurological issues.

Since British screenwriter Dennis Potter had characters burst out in ironic song and dance numbers in the BBC drama Pennies from Heaven.

American television have been bursting with musical dramas. Some like Cop Rock lacked the irony, whereas Glee went for straightforward musical celebration.

The pilot directed by Richard Shepard does in some way try to bridge this gap. As a drama it was nothing new. Zoe helps a colleague Simon open up about his father. She rather takes a shine to him but he is engaged.
