"Tomorrow" on paper did sound like an interesting episode, it did have possible potential of being too complicated in the latter stages but overall it was a great idea and relatively different for 'Criminal Intent' at the time. Goren is such a great character and one of the main reasons for why prime-'Criminal Intent' (for me the earlier seasons were better, though that may not be a popular opinion) was so good and Vincent D'Onofrio never stopped being a joy.
Is "Tomorrow" 'Criminal Intent's' Season 2 at its best? No, but it is not too far off as the best assets of the many good things are excellently done. Is it 'Criminal Intent at its best? No, there are far better episodes before and since "Tomorrow". Is it a great episode? Not quite, though many individual things are so, and it very nearly is. Is it very good? Absolutely it is and it is an episode that doesn't have anything offensively bad or anything but just lacked the extra something.
Part of me did feel that the reveal of who was responsible was a little too obvious too early. Despite a lot of suspects and motives, it was clear that they were up to no good in some shape or form or knew more than they let down.
Did find myself a little frustrated too at how some of the adult supporting characters were in serious need of a reality check and so ridiculously out of touch in a way not particularly realistic.
On the other hand, "Tomorrow" is well photographed and keeps things things simple and intimate without going too far on either. In terms of the musc, it doesn't over-emphasise or feel like it should have been used less. Instead letting the talk-heavy but always taut and thoughtful script shine and do much of the talking. The story is never less than engaging with a fair share of non-convoluted twists and turns that are buyable, how the detectives get to the conclusions they get to intrigue. The questioning sees Goren's quirky/neurotic mannerisms really shining in a way that is entertaining and sympathetic.
Like when he shows awareness and accomodates through his body positioning the height difference between him and a witness, aimed to put her at ease and not scare her. Love the chemistry between him and Goren and it was great to see more of it, after wanting more of it in some of the previous Season 2 episodes. Sarah and Hannah, especially the latter, are interesting characters. Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe are great (was there any doubt though?), as is Courtney B. Vance, and Merritt Wever brings a good deal of intensity to Hannah.
Summing up, very good. 8/10
