Letting Character Drive the Plot
16 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
After the cliffhanger last week mid-battle at Hilltop, I figured a majority of this week's episode would be covering that conflict and the possible resolution of The Whisperers in general. While I was partially right, I certainly didn't think the structure of this week's episode would be much more 'walk and talk' than it would be an all out battle outside of the Hilltop walls. Luckily, that's the type of Walking Dead episode I usually enjoy. Some of my favorite material to ever come out of this show was back in season 4 and 5 while the crew was scattered across the towns, trying to find a new home, while also dealing with the losses at the hands of Terminus and The Governor.

It felt like there would be at least a few episodes of battle aftermath while they gear up for one final showdown with Alpha. And if I'm being honest, I found the death of Alpha to be a bit anticlimactic. It was cool seeing Negan kill her in a similar way to when Rick nearly killed him. And the twist with Carol letting Negan out of his cell to essentially take out Alpha was also clever, but it left something to be desired at the end of the day.

But at the very least, I was excited to see this show went back to having characters drive the plot instead of the other way around. It will be interesting to see how the team will do with Beta & the remaining Whisperers still at large, without their leader.
