Benza English (2020– )
10/10
Better than the original

Warning: Spoilers
I liked the original Benza series, with an amusing initial premise turned into a massive meta-comedy by throwing in every Japanese anime and movie trope imaginable.

This improves upon the original series. You can see how the filmmakers and cast have honed their skills over time, and with both English education and the "commentary TV show" format to play with, the series has a whole new trove of Japanese media tropes to explode. I love the addition of Fanny Deep and the swimsuit model (whose name escapes me) to the cast, and can't wait to see how they lampoon the formula as time goes on.

Bob Werley is a star turn as "Bob," a role that demands quotation marks every time "Bob" is mentioned. He can play the role of ridiculous "Charisma Man" without actually being one, which would be less funny. I loved Maria's line about being a European enjoying the rare chance to speak English on TV - one of those little things you don't even notice until someone makes a joke about it.

I'm keen to see how this series continues. So far, I think it's been spot-on. Also, I think I went to university with people like David in the "Hit it Hard" segment. Well done, guys - looking forward to watching more from the Benza team!
