The ridiculous camping trip aside, once again Monk is shortchanged. He had a breakdown. There was never any misuse of a gun or a dangerous action against anyone. He has continued to do great service to the community despite his neuroses. The two people who admired him simply turn against him. No explanation. The trip itself is pretty dumb with a couple of guys who killed an armed guard running around the wood with them.
