With director Paul McGuigan Involved. The pilot of Emergence was always going to be more than something run of the mill.

Jo Evans (Allison Tolman) is the police chief in a small Long Island town. One night there is a power blackout and a plane crashes on the beach.

Nearby she discovers a young girl without a scratch on her who cannot remember her name, her family or where she comes from.

Jo brings the girl to her own home and calls her Piper temporarily. However Jo discovers that fake government agents wanting to see her and later two people come up who claim they are her parents.

Meanwhile Piper has some powers such as making rain move sideways or the television sets displays strange patterns.

This is what is called a puzzle box mystery. Is Piper an alien, created in a lab or is Emergence a 'Lost' style drama trying hard not to be like Lost.

An intriguing opening episode, Tolman is good and what we see of her family and ex husband. A lot depends on how the future episodes go, whether it can keep the pace and its concept going without viewers losing interest.
